The death of Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor – also known by her Islamic name Shuhada Sadaqat- at the age of 56 has been met with deep shock and has prompted tributes from friends, acquaintances and those millions of people who simply loved her music.
Her exceptional talent was clear, but like so many who live this close to the numinous, it came at a price. To sing she had to release her very soul, but grounding herself in the material world afterwards cannot have been easy.
In fact, her birth chart lacks the Earth element which gives us our sense of rootedness and enables us to feel comfortable in our bodies. She is not alone in this, of course, all of us lack something and the search for it is often what drives us.
Sinéad found her sensuality and rootless through the North Node in Taurus, that most tangible and grounded of signs. Many singers have planets in this sign but for her it was perhaps more of a destiny point.
This is a chart in which deep emotion connects to the collective psyche and must be expressed on the public stage. Her voice was the voice of many. A way of healing herself and perhaps, those who listened to her felt they too, had been heard and healed.
Astrologers, see the 12th house Mercury in Scorpio with Neptune and the South Node. Mercury rules 10th.
Venus, which rules Taurus and her Libra Moon and MC, the public point of her chart, is absolutely key. This is a warrior woman channelling the Aphrodite/Venus archetype on behalf of us all. She wore her Venus, in a sense, on her sleeve, exposed and powerful. She was clearly immensely brave.
Venus is placed in the 1st house in Sagittarius, the sign of faith and meaning together with the Sun and Ascendant, the search for these things was how she approached the world. It’s a mutable, changeable sign, so she wasn’t afraid to shrug off belief systems that no longer rang true.
Venus is also the focal point of a challenging T-square with Saturn, Chiron, Pluto and Uranus. This is a huge amount of collective pressure and expectation to juggle and manage, and without anything solid in her chart to hold on to.
The IC, the most hidden point otf her chart is ruled by Mars on the MC again, ruled by that Venus. She opened all of herself to the world. It sits on the cusp of the 5th which is the house of creativity, and of children. Perhaps the pain of losing her son finally became too much.
We don’t have a time of death but we can see that Uranus was making a quincunx to that Venus, and Venus herself has turned retrograde in her 8th house of endings, in Leo, the sign of the Sun.
