On Saturday, 23rd September 2023 at 07.50 BST, the Sun enters Libra and begins its descent into the underworld. Early autumn days have a poignant beauty as we leave summer behind and the shadows begin to lengthen.

Equinox means ‘equal night’. It describes a moment of balance between light and darkness, no less important for its fleeting passage. 

The Equinox chart sets the blueprint for the next three months and this year the Sun and Venus are in each other’s signs suggesting extra emphasis on diplomacy and relationship. Mars is there too, offering the possibility of strategy and compromise rather than blazing guns. We may have to accept limitations, however, even while we keep our own interests and values in mind. We may think it’s all about us, but it is about us within the relationship and in relation to society. 

The Sun makes a niggling connection to Saturn in Pisces illustrating the difficulty of negotiating our dreams into reality, even while the Capricorn Moon tries to put solid structures in place. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto form a triangle across Earth and Water signs which really sums up all our main concerns, with the focus on Neptune, encouraging us to channel all our power and idealism through the lens of compassion.

Libra is the 7th sign and begins the second half of the Zodiac. It opposes go-getting, Mars-ruled Aries, with a more sociable energy that’s all about relationship. Companionship is important to Librans. This is an Air sign and Sun Libra people engage with the world through the thinking faculty. Their symbol is the scales and they seek balance. 

Libra ruler is Venus, and Libra people often possess a friendly charm and love of beauty and harmony in all its forms. This often means they have a strong antipathy to anything ugly or inharmonious, disliking – and often actively avoiding – argument and conflict. 

Decisions can be an issue as the Libran wants everyone to win and must weigh up all the options. This makes them excellent mediators, however. Compromise is a Libra key-word.

Librans are usually easy-going companions who enjoy civilised pleasures and sharing the ‘good life’ with their partner. However, they may avoid confrontation in favour of sulking. Take them out to an art gallery and come back to the discussion later when they’ve had time to think.

This is a Cardinal sign, so Librans are natural leaders and able to take the initiative. Strategy and negotiation are their strong points. They can be steely underneath their smile. Don’t underestimate them.
