Matthew Perry

Yesterday the world lost Matthew Langford Perry, a brilliant comic actor, known and loved for his role as Chandler Bing in Friends.

Perry’s birth chart shows a Leo Ascendant with a generous and expressive Leo Sun in the first house. He approached the world with a big heart, shining warmth and light on all around him.

But for all their big personalities, Sun Leos can be fragile underneath and need plenty of attention and reinforcement to believe in their self-worth. In this chart, the Sun is alone and isolated in the 1st house making just one close aspect to Neptune, planet of dreams, imagination and illusion.

Perry spoke this Leo Sun in an interview with the New York Times in 2002 when he said; “I wanted to be famous so badly…’

His almost crippling Leo desire for recognition is here challenged by the aspect to Neptune in intense and sensitive Scorpio. This suggests struggles around direction and focus, the challenge of expressing the vision of perfection in the world as it actually is. The challenge of realising one’s dreams. This aspect indicates a profound longing for true spiritual connection and a loneliness stemming from the eternal elusiveness of becoming one with the ideal.

Drugs and alcohol, so often linked to Neptune, offer the temporary illusion of connection with the yearned-for Nirvana.

But Neptune also offers the possibility of compassion and Matthew Perry was an active spokesperson for the issues around drug addiction. In 2011 he set up Perry House, a rehab centre in his Malibu mansion.

Combine all this with the penetrating and intense Scorpio Moon opposite judgemental Saturn, and a painful quincunx to Chiron in Pisces in 8th house. This was a man of spine-tingling sensitivity whose profound emotional needs may never really have been met.

The time of death is not known but the LA Times states that ‘Authorities responded about 4 p.m. to his home,…’ This equates to around 23h/11pm UT, soon after the powerful energies of the lunar eclipse.

This Moon/Sun opposition carries the stark symbolism of leaving something behind in order to move on. The Moon was in Taurus, representing the body and material world possessed to the Sun in Scorpio, sign of transformation, and sometimes of death. This fell across Matthew Perry’s 3rd/9th houses creating an awkward quincunx with natal Jupiter, ruler of his own 8th house of transformation.

The 8th house in his chart is the realm of watery Pisces, the sign of merging in a spiritual sense, and there we find transiting Neptune, making a trine with Matthew Perry’s natal Neptune and promising him the possibility of genuine oneness if he is prepared to make the sacrifice.

Mercury in watery Scorpio exactly on the cusp of the 4th house of endings is challenging the Ascendant/Descendant axis which fixes him to the material plane. This is Mercury as psychopomp, gathering his soul and escorting it to another world. May he rest there peacefully.
