Mercury enters Capricorn at 14h32 UT on 1st December 2023

There is always a slight anxiety to Mercury in Sagittarius where it’s in its detriment. This planet likes to communicate and connect, tie things up with bits of string, as it were. It’s comfortable with detail. Sagittarius, however, detests detail. It has vision and is galloping off towards the horizon in search of it. All that connection stuff would only tie it down.

In Capricorn, our planet of communication is more comfortable; it can think sensibly and strategically, write purposeful emails and make serious phone calls. It also makes plans which it fully intends to implement.

Mercury’s entry into Capricorn is immediately assisted by a helpful aspect to Cap ruler Saturn in Pisces, so those dreams and visions we’ve all been talking about can perhaps now be bounded and inscribed in stone.

Documents may also be drawn up, but it’s best not to sign them yet as Mercury is in retrograde shadow. On December 13th, around the Sag New Moon, it stations at 8 deg 39’ Capricorn and travels back into Sagittarius to party through the Christmas season. Who wants to think seriously then anyway?!

With unusually good timing, Mercury’s direct station occurs in Sagittarius (22deg 11′) on 2nd January 2024 at 3:37 am UT soon after Jupiter has also stationed direct giving the start of 2024 a positive, forward-looking feel. If you have planets or angles around that degree this could symbolise a very welcome break after a period of frustration and should be able to look forward to a more productive New Year.

Wait until 21st January, however, when Mercury returns to 8 degrees Capricorn, the degree at which it turned retrograde, to sign those documents. Pluto re-enters Aquarius that day too emphasising the shift to new things.
