Sun enters Capricorn at 3.27 am UT on 22nd December 2023, Winter Solstice
This is the moment of deepest darkness in the northern hemisphere, the pause between the inhale and the exhale, as the Sun reaches its nadir and then turns towards the light, warm days of summer.
The sign of Capricorn holds both darkness and light within it. It is supremely practical, wedded to structure and the material world, but it also has a profoundly spiritual side. It’s ruled by Saturn and it’s symbol is the enigmatic Sea-goat.
Capricorn is one of the four Cardinal signs – others are Aries, Cancer and Libra – which mark the Solstices and the Equinoxes forming the pillars of our year. These signs begin a new season. They are initiators, goal-oriented, keen to get things started and happy to lead.
People with planets and angles in Capricorn approach things from a practical perspective. They are careful, alert to risks and safety-conscious. This awareness of danger can make them seem pessimistic to the more carefree, fiery signs, but Capricorn would argue they are simply being realistic and list the numerous pitfalls awaiting those who are more careless.
This somewhat dour realism can be frustrating but the good news is that Capricorn is usually happy to help others achieve their goals in a practical way.
Whilst their unadulterated realism can make Capricorn seem gloomy, they usually have an acerbic sense of humour and often a hidden mystical side to their nature too.

Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, is a Sun Capricorn. He has expressed this through working in business and then subsequently by becoming ordained in that most traditional and hierarchical of organisations, the Anglican church. His inclusive evangelical approach has not always been approved of, however, and speaks to his unaspected Venus in humane, kind and egalitarian Aquarius, which never assumes it is more deserving of attention than anyone else.
The Archbishop practices a pragmatic Christianity which seeks to be useful and embraces the love, humility and acceptance of all people regardless of race, creed or sex.
His Scorpio Mars suggests a sensitive man driven by deep emotional convictions while the Capricorn Sun and Jupiter in Virgo tell of his considerable practical ability. Jupiter in Virgo also suggests he finds faith and meaning through practical service.
The absence of planets in Fire in the Archbishop’s chart may serve to accentuate his faith and enhance his ability to inspire others as he reaches both outside and inside himself for the light that must surely illuminate his life.
Wishing you, wherever you are, light and joy during this festive season. Happy Solstice 🌟⭐🔥
