Mercury enters Aquarius at 05.10 on 5th February 2024

Always ahead of the curve unless it’s retrograde, Mercury is the first to join the Sun and Pluto on what will soon be a full-on Aquarian party.

During February our personal planets dive, one after the other, into their annual encounter with Pluto and this is the first time for over 200 years that it happens in Aquarius. So, a new initiation. How will these planets react to the Lord of the Underworld in this Fixed, Air sign? These contacts will give us the first flavour of how our next 20 years might play out. It’s essentially a trailer, a few frames of each major character in the film. Only Jupiter won’t make it on set this February. We’ll have to wait until 2032 to see how that combination plays out.

Generally, with Mercury in Aquarius, our thinking becomes more inclusive, detached and idealistic. Aquarius is about freedom and being your own person, but it can get a bit fixed and fanatical in its opinions:

“Yes, my version of Utopia is definitely the correct one, and if you don’t agree I may have to shoot you for the good of the collective.”

Sadly, we all know that vibe.

With this shift, though, we have moved away from personal ambition, from pragmatism, planning and strategy and slipped into the realm of intellect and a rational vision of how things could be. We’ll doubtless have razor sharp insights which may – or may not – work on the ground.

As it bumps into Pluto around lunchtime on 5th, Mercury could be taking a plunge into these humanitarian values and, fuelled by the power of the underworld, it might insist on some progressive and wide-reaching theories of equality which could help to transform our current thought.

With Aquarius, however, the need is always to acknowledge the role of the ego in the equation. Leo, its polar opposite, may otherwise appear in the form of our shadow side as we proclaim our vision of utopia – with ourselves indisputably in charge.
