Mars enters Aquarius

Mars enters Aquarius at 06.05 UTC, 13th February 2024

Mars in Aquarius is rational and detached, concerned with the collective rather than the individual. It asserts itself here for its friends, or in the service of an ideal.

If you have planets around 0 or 1 degrees of Aquarius or the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) expect to feel this shift more keenly than the rest of us. This is energising your desire to get out and meet people, to join groups and become a part of wider society. You might even take a deep dive into something you want to change or transform about this aspect of yourself as Mars joins with Pluto tomorrow.

In the wider world, as Mars moved slowly through the final, anaretic, degree of Capricorn last night, there was yet another terrible night of bombardment in Gaza. This time in Rafah where a million civilians were sheltering, having absolutely nowhere else on this planet to go.

The anaretic degree often resembles a frenzied push to conclude or achieve whatever that sign currently represents for the planets travelling through it. In Mars, Capricorn means war over land, buildings and status. It’s ambitious and determined.

Mars in Aquarius might, we can hope, be different. Mars here fights for ideals and humane values. It’s more likely to get out its soap box or take up the pen than rush for the sword. It deals in ideas and theses not practical, concrete action. And, true to form, this morning ideas are being discussed:

Biden has pitched in to suggest – not sure it was any stronger than that – that Israel might like to call off the Rafah offensive.

Macron and Shultz are shaking hands as they pontificate about European defence.

We can be sure that if Mars in Aquarius does go into battle, it will be with the latest technology. Technology and science in the service of its goals, to pursue its own version of a just society and promote its own Utopia – which hopefully, might align with our own.

But it is not ambitious; Aquarius Mars is genuinely rooting for the group and it will take up arms and orient its goals in defence of that group. Tomorrow, on St.Valentine’s Day, it meets Pluto, God of the Underworld, who is also of a mind to transform the world and perhaps create a more just society – regardless of how that might have to be achieved. This may strengthen and transform Mars fighting spirit and put real power behind its words.

However, it’s important to remember that planets in Aquarius operate in a detached and rational way. They are not interested in the suffering of the individual, or even the suffering of the many, they are interested in what is best for the collective. And, as a Fixed Air sign, there is a risk it will become entrenched in its own beliefs, unwilling to look outside any box but its own.
