Steve Wright

The loss of much-loved British broadcaster Steve Wright was a shock to the public and to those who knew him personally. Since the news broke of his passing the media has been flooded with tributes and messages of appreciation for a man who saw radio as his vocation rather than just his job.

For more than two decades, his ‘Steve Wright in the Afternoon’ show was the soundtrack of households and workplaces across the UK. In his last show in 2022 he said;

“I’ve tried to make the show unique and just be good company. I can only hope that we’ve done that some of the time.”

Listeners would agree he did it pretty much all of the time and a glance at his birth chart gives clues to his warm and caring personality. We don’t have a birth time, but the planets tell us a great deal.

The Moon in generous and outgoing Leo describes a man whose instinctive responses were heartfelt and inspiring. Someone, who knew how to spread warmth and good feelings. A man too, who would automatically take the lead and who attracted, and needed, attention and appreciation.

The challenge from Saturn suggests a measure of insecurity about whether his success was deserved but this would also have added a sensitivity which Leo placements sometimes lack.

Mars in Capricorn suggests ambition and a natural capcity for working hard within an established and respected organisation such as the BBC.

Jupiter in Cancer speaks of his capacity for nurturing and caring for others, and his ability to create a sense of family around him. Its promiximity to technological Uranus symbolises how he achieved this through the medium of radio.

The Sun and Mercury in Virgo show organisational skill, love of language and a helpful, sensitive and conscientious energy at the centre of his being.

Compassion and sensitivity and perhaps a sense of being an outsider in some way, someone pursuing his own path, were also evident in the Venus/Neptune conjunction challenged by Chiron. This was a romantic man who understood loneliness and wanted to bring a sense of belonging and relationship to all.

At the time of his passing, transiting Mars, conjunct with Pluto, made an awkward semi-sextile to his natal Mars and opposed progressed Jupiter – perhaps he no longer had the same sense of family to sustain him. Transiting Mercury squared the progressed Sun/Saturn conjunction in Scorpio, while progressed Mercury in Scorpio challenged transiting Pluto. These aspects are emotional and intense. Meanwhile, Sun was making a a flowing trine to his natal Neptune offering the possibility of merging with the ideal, with this aspect there is no more separation or solitude.

Progressed Uranus turned retrograde in September 2023 suggesting that something changed for him at this point. The Sun/Neptune trine shows he has now found peace.
