Spring Equinox. Sun enters Aries at 3.06 UTC, 20th March 2024 

This is the start of the new Zodiac cycle. The Sun at 0 degrees Aries represents new initiatives, leadership, impatience, courage and beginnings of all kinds. Pay attention to what you’re doing today as it may indicate themes for the coming year.

At the Equinox, day and night are of equal length all over the globe. It’s a time of transition and of balance. In the northern hemisphere, leaves are unfurling and birds are beginning to nest. Persephone has emerged from the darkness of Hades’ realm and the earth is promising abundance once again – despite our best efforts to hinder it!

The astrological year concludes on 19th with a soulful harmony between the Sun and Moon in the final degrees of Pisces and Cancer respectively, suggesting the nostalgia and yearning of an ending that was always inevitable.

Then the mood becomes more vibrant and energetic as first the Moon, then the Sun move into the Fire signs of Leo (Moon) and Aries (Sun). 

This is a colourful, confident and intuitive combination and it feels like a positive beginning. The minor key is played out through the Venus/Saturn connection in Pisces, reminding us that love, imagination and dreams can also entail pain, sacrifice and responsibility. Perhaps something must be let go and laid at the altar of this new year before we can truly move forward. 

Once in Aries, the Sun makes a useful sextile to Pluto suggesting that workable change may be one of this year’s themes. The Moon in Leo opposes Pluto, so perhaps the needs of the individual will be in conflict with the collective desire for transformation? How can the individual contribution be recognised as we move forward with social change? What is the role of the leader?

The Aries Sun doesn’t have a problem with the idea of individuality. Bravery and assertiveness do not come out of meetings and committees. This Sun will fight for the change it believes in, backed by the power of Pluto and Mars in Aquarius. 

Aquarius ruler Uranus is ploughing a furrow through Taurus, churning up our stability and continuing to create insecurity around food, finances and land. Jupiter is approaching it to expand philosophies of freedom and faith.

Neptune remains in Pisces, making an uncomfortable contact with Mars and reminding us that compassion is still key as we push forward.

Mercury’s not yet retrograde, but he’s thinking about it. Close to Chiron and the North Node in Aries this could be a year when we say what we think and risk being labelled as the outsider. Perhaps now we really do have to go our own way.
