Mercury turns retrograde at 27 deg 13’ Aries on 1st April 2024 at 23.14 UT

Mercury, our planet of communication, which was within a couple of days of leaving Aries, turns back and retraces its steps – or so it appears from our viewpoint on Earth.

Mercury in Aries is honest, direct and will say it how it sees it – sometimes without much pause for reflection or thought for the feelings of others. It’s quick to understand, likes to get to the point and, being Mars-ruled, can be argumentative.

Now it presses pause. It’s time to rethink, rework and generally revisit all the things we thought we understood and had decided, especially those which were potentially rash, dangerous or impulsive. 

This three-week retrograde period gives us time to reconsider all those opinions once so firmly and certainly held. We may be looking again at our goals and taking more time over our communication. 

Gemini and Virgo, the Mercury-ruled signs, may find the retrograde especially frustrating. These signs can suffer from nervous exhaustion as their minds are so active. Mercury retrograde is a signal to take a deep breath and a step back. Now is not the time to push forward.

Mercury retrograde is never a great time for travel and communication of all kinds can be muddled. Signing contracts is not recommended – or if you absolutely must, then read all the small print carefully – then read it again!

Mercury turns retrograde three times a year and in 2024 these take place mainly in the Fire signs – Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Fire is about intuition and confidence. It’s inspiring and enthusiastic. It’s warm and magnetic and draws you in. 

Mercury in these signs – especially Aries and Sag – certainly knows how to talk! During the 2024 retrograde periods it may also learn how to reflect.

• November 25 to December 15, 2024
