Sun enters Cancer; Summer Solstice

Sun enters Cancer at 21h51 BST on 20th June 2024

This is the moment when the Sun appears to stand still from our point of view on Earth. The day with the most hours of daylight in the northern hemisphere before our Solar light turns and begins its descent.

This day sets the tone for this next quarter of the year until the Equinox when the Sun moves into Libra.

This is Litha, one of the 8 sabbats of the ancient Celtic tradition and is celebrated with hilltop bonfires. It’s a day to honour brightness. Find a quiet spot to meditate and connect with your inner power.

For this Solstice, the Sun has the company of Mercury and Venus, the planets it’s closest to. In very Cancer-like fashion, they form a little tribe in this Cardinal Water sign.

The Moon, ruling the Cancer planets, is in Sagittarius, a Mutable Fire sign specialising in vision and adventure. She adds enthusiasm to the naturally cautious and conservative planets in Cancer, lending them, for a season, a confidence and optimism they don’t always have.

All the Cardinal angles are times for setting things in motion and for new beginnings. Allow your imagination to expand and wander under the rulership of the Sagittarius Moon.

The Solstice is quickly followed by a Full Moon at 1 deg 7’ Capricorn early on 22nd, signifying the culmination of something which has offered status and containment in the material world. The square to Neptune in Pisces suggests moving on from old dreams.

So this is the time to begin your next adventure, whilst taking into account your values and considering the needs of your tribe. Move forward cautiously and with sensitivity. Use your imagination to conjure a vision of what just might be.
