This New Moon is exactly conjunct Sirius, also known as the ‘Dog Star’. Sirius is the brightest star in the constellation of Canis (Dog) Major, which, from 3rd July to 11th August, rises and sets with the Sun.

The Romans called this period of high summer in the northern hemisphere ‘the days of the dog star’ which we’ve shortened to ‘dog days’.
