Sun enters Libra at 13.43 BST on 22nd September: Autumn Equinox

Equinox literally means equal night when day and night are the same length the world over This is one of the four Cardinal points of the year, setting us up for the coming three months until the Winter Solstice.

This year it is more significant than usual because it falls between eclipses.

This period is linked to the myth of Persephone, who was abducted by Hades/Pluto, King of the Underworld, and taken to be his queen. Her mother, Demeter, the harvest goddess, refused to allow anything to grow until her daughter was returned to her.

After much negotiation, Persephone was returned to the world for six months of the year so the flowers could blossom and the crops could grow.

This myth of abduction, defilement and negotiation seems especially relevant this year; we can see it being played out on a macro scale on the world stage. It’s also reflected in the Equinox chart where Venus, symbol of the feminine, makes a challenging aspect to Pluto in Capricorn.

Venus is the dispositor (ruler) of the Equinox Sun and so is always important at this time. Currently, she’s at home in the last degree of Libra. This is the powerful anaretic degree in which a sign achieves its highest potency before giving way to the next. Venus, here, is confronted by Pluto who is insisting on transformation and is about to take her into his realm (Scorpio).

The message here, is that it’s crucial to stay strong and hold on to our values for the next few months, because Pluto can bring power issues and make us question our self-worth.

And this should be possible. For all her charm, Venus in Libra is no pushover. She knows how to negotiate, and she also knows also how to draw lines and set boundaries.

The Sun enters Libra making a Grand Trine in Air with the Moon and Pluto suggesting much discussion and negotiation.

However, the trine actually perfects earlier in Earth and also involves both Uranus and Neptune. This again suggests the ongoing themes of land and property, sudden, radical change, compassion and, perhaps, sacrifice.
