A note on the sad death of Liam Payne who passed yesterday in Buenos Aires, Argentina. A man who brought joy to millions with the band One Direction, but who was probably no stranger to the darkness with Pluto close to his Scorpio Ascendant, at odds with his friendly, detached idealistic Aquarius Moon.

His Virgo Sun and Mercury speak of a practical, helpful, sensitive, skilful person with a quick mind. Someone who who needed to be busy and useful. Virgo is a sign which badly wants to get it right and thrives best in an organised and orderly world. 

His chart reveals an isolated Venus in Leo in the 9th house of meaning, faith and long journeys. Leo Venus is warm-hearted and generous and just a bit fragile. It needs constant appreciation and attention to feel it has worth and value. It may have been difficult to come down to earth after his early mega-stardom.

In Payne’s chart Venus rules the 12th house of the collective unconscious, of the longing for the numinous. A longing which he may have self-medicated through drugs and alcohol. 

With Pisces on the IC, Neptune is co-ruler of the very base of his chart – endings, the ancestors, the ultimate home.

The chart for the time of his death shows a web of connections with his natal chart, and, strikingly, Neptune was on the Ascendant in Buenos Aires at the moment of his fatal fall. It completes the current ‘cradle’ formation which includes Venus, Pluto and Uranus between 26-29 degrees of Water and Earth signs and ties in to Payne’s natal Saturn/Chiron opposition.

In his progressed chart, Neptune is slowly stationing direct and would have finally changed direction in May 2025.  Perhaps there is a sense in which the alcohol was no longer enough and the mystical longing return to the source somehow became reality. A talented young man has left us. Someone who outwardly appeared to have everything, but who maybe couldn’t find that internal connection with himself.
