Sun enters Capricorn

Winter Solstice

Sun enters Capricorn at 9h20 UT on 21st December 2024.

This is the moment when the Sun pauses on its journey and, in the northern hemisphere, turns to carry us back towards the light.

The solstice ends that restless, liminal period of darkness that followed Samhain. As the Sun enters Cardinal Capricorn, a new note of initiative and determination is born.

Capricorn is an Earth sign, its symbol is the seagoat. The tail in the water shows the spirituality that underpins this most pragmatic of signs.

All of the final four signs of the Zodiac – Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces – take us beyond the realm of the personal into a search for underlying meaning, a quest to discover the deep structures that flow beneath our material lives here on earth. These signs give us faith (Sagittarius), structures to contain our beliefs (Capricorn), ideals (Aquarius), and a longing for transcendance (Pisces). They offer us the promise of something greater, a meaning that flows beyond our circumscribed material existence.

This year the action-oriented, Solstice Sun is square the Moon’s nodes which are still in Libra and Aries, – and so about compromise versus personal agency within relationships. The challenge from the Sun asks us to integrate responsibility and duty within social demands and constraints into the relationship dynamic.

On the wider stage, the Capricorn Sun symbolises the difficulties involved in taking the initiative and creating viable structures when there are others, with different views and beliefs to consider. The challenge facing Syria is especially pertinent here.

In a nutshell, this is the challenge of tolerance. The challenge of taking the initiative and creating structures (social or personal) in which compromise and relationship can be balanced by the pursuit of personal goals.

Capricorn is ruled by Saturn, currently in Pisces, where it struggles to put down solid foundations in a sea of imagination and compassion. Saturn here longs for something more spiritual but equally seeks to contain it’s yearning incase it wanders too far down the road into Neptunian chaos.

This solstice, Saturn in Pisces is exactly opposed by the pragmatic Virgo Moon. Together they form a Mutable Grand Cross with Jupiter and Mercury. This has a dynamic, adaptable and restless feel as if nothing is yet settled or decided – which may indeed be the case.

Pluto and Mars in Leo are also involved bringing us back to the question of what we, as individuals contribute to society and how we can use our personal power in a positive way.

For each of us, the period from now until the Spring Equinox in March could well be a period where are obliged to move forward in a way that has to continually adapt to shifting situations and circumstances.

Wishing you all Peace and Goodwill this Solstice.
