Mercury enters Capricorn at 10h30 UT on 8th January 2025

Above all else, Mercury in Capricorn is about thinking realistically.

During the past week, Mercury has been in the last degrees of optimistic Sagittarius, making confusing squares to Neptune – our dreams and ideals, and we may have got carried away with unrealistic projects or even a bit depressed as everything just seemed foggy and difficult to make happen.

Mercury entering Capricorn brings the focus back to us and what we can achieve for ourselves. As every Capricorn Sun, Moon or Ascendant will tell you, in the end, we are alone and only have ourselves to rely on.

The Capricorn fishy tail knows this is not entirely true of course. We are all connected at a deep, spiritual level and we do need to look out for one another. What they really mean is that we must take responsibility for ourselves and not hand over our power to others.

And that includes the Capricorn power to initiate action and make decisions to secure our material status and security as best we can.

Action is what we are now considering. What action can we take to get what we want and ensure our position in the material world?

Capricorn ruler Saturn is still in compassionate, imaginative and occasionally unrealistic Pisces, and action planet Mars is retrograde, so Mercury in Cap is currently more about planning and thinking strategically than taking action.

Pisces reminds us that the perception of being in control is an illusion and the universe has its own plans. As the mystic Pierre Teilhard de Chardin said: “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience”.

Nevertheless, here we are, on this planet, so we do still have to take action in the material world. Mercury in Capricorn is the time to look at things as realistically as possible.
